Silas lay next to Aaron, eyebrows knitted in a way that told Aaron he was deep in thought. Their nights were always like this, pressed together and teetering on the edge of something more.

Silas pursed his lips, then finally spoke. “Would you like to move in with me?” he asked.

Aaron laughed. “Way to jump right in.”

“Feel free to say no,” said Silas. “But I have to return home eventually. We are essentially living together right now. It made sense to extend an offer.”

“Aren’t you tired of me yet?” asked Aaron.

Silas frowned. “If I was tired of you, why would I ask you to live with me?”

Aaron sighed and let his forehead rest against Silas’. “Because you’re kind,” he muttered.

Silas cupped his cheek. “I like you,” he said. “Isn’t this what people do when they like each other? Assuming you also like me, of course.”

“I like you,” said Aaron quickly.

I love you.

“I suppose I don’t know the correct protocol,” said Silas. “I’m not sure I’ve done anything that would qualify as ‘dating’, but this feels like the next logical step.”

Aaron couldn’t help the grin that spread across his lips. “You want to date me, Silas?”

“Obviously,” he answered. “Do you want to date me?”

“Yeah,” answered Aaron. His emotions were still raw from talking to Jack. He felt his heart beat a little louder, felt something warm in his chest. He bit his lip. Loving Silas meant feeling everything, the good and the bad.

“So is that a yes to moving in? Or is it too soon?” asked Silas. “I think this is traditionally a much larger step in a relationship, but we haven’t really been traditional thus far.”

“Yeah,” muttered Aaron. “We didn’t exactly meet in a coffee shop.” He sighed again. Living with Silas sounded perfect. It was exactly what he wanted. It was what he’d wanted since the first night they’d spent together. But living with Silas was a commitment he wasn’t sure he wanted to make. It meant they’d stay together forever or eventually break apart. Forever felt too long and breaking up felt too painful, and being together implied other intimate things Aaron wasn’t sure he could promise.

“You can say no,” said Silas. “I’ve never wooed anyone before. If this is wrong, you can tell me.”

“I want to say yes,” said Aaron. “But I’m still a little fucked up. I don’t know if it’s a good idea.”

“Are you trying to tell me it’s not me, it’s you?” asked Silas.

“No,” Aaron answered quickly. “I mean, it is me, I’m definitely the problem, but I want—um—more, you know?” His heart was pounding and his throat was tight for no discernible reason. He felt his internal wall repairing itself, blocking out Silas and Jack and Daniel. The words “I want you,” dangled from the tip of his tongue before he was able to swallow them back. It wasn’t the relationship that terrified him—it was something else, something he wasn’t ready to name.

“I don’t mean to rush you,” said Silas.

“You’re not,” said Aaron.
